c h a p t e r 9 Hypothesis Testing Introduction Is global warming real? There is much evidence to suggest that temperatures have been increasing since the early part of the 20th century. Whether the increase is caused by human activity or whether it is part of a natural cycle is a topic of debate. Studies of global warming involve analyzing temperature records. The following table presents the record high and low temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit in Washington, D.C., along with the year in which the record was set, for a selection of days in April through September. The column labeled ‘‘More Recent’’ tells which record, high or low, occurred more recently.
