Chapter 10: Summary Definition/Procedure Example 10.1 Introduction to Signed Numbers Signed Numbers A positive number is a number that is greater than 0. On a number line, positive numbers are to the right of 0. A negative number is a number that is less than 0. To indicate that a number is negative, we put a negative sign, , in front of it. On a number line, negative numbers are to the left of 0. Zero is neither positive nor negative. (p. 717) Graph the numbers on a number line. 2, 4, 0, 3.8, 1 2 Solution 1 2 24 2 0 2 3.8 25242322 2 21 0 1 3 4 5 Comparing Signed Numbers Remember that numbers get smaller as we move to the left on a number line, and numbers get larger as we move to the right on a number line. We can use the and symbols to compare signed numbers. (p. 718) Fill in the blank with or to compare the numbers. a) 3 2 b) 5 1 Solution Let’s look at a number line so that we can see how the numbers compare to each other. 2524232221 0 1 2 3 4 5 a) 3 2 because 3 is to the right of 2 on the number line. b) 5 1 because 5 is to the left of 1 on the number line. Absolute Value The absolute value of a number is the distance of the number from 0. Because distance is never negative, the absolute value of a number is never negative. The absolute value of a number is denoted by two vertical bars, . (p. 720) Evaluate 0 4 0 and 04 0. Solution Read 04 0 as “the absolute value of 4.” 04 0 4 Read 04 0 as “the absolute value of 4.” 04 0 4 Distance 5 4, so |24| 5 4 Distance 5 4, so |4| 5 4 2524232221 0 1 2 3 4 5 The Opposite of a Number Two numbers are opposites of each other if they are the same distance from 0 on a number line but are on opposite sides of 0. To fi nd the opposite of a number, we write a negative sign in front of it. The opposite of a positive number is a negative number. The opposite of a negative number is a positive number. (p. 721) Find the opposite of each number. a) 8 b) 5.3 c) 0 Solution a) The opposite of 8 is 8. b) To fi nd the opposite of 5.3, put a negative sign in front of the number: (5.3). Now, evaluate: (5.3) 5.3. c) The opposite of 0 is 0 0. www.mhhe.com/messersmith CHAPTER 10 Summary 757
