Now try explaining it to someone else. That challenge is the core of Mitch Kramer’s job. As a technical writer at an electronics manufacturing company, Mitch writes how-to guides for the assembly and use of products as complicated as circuit boards and computer processors. “My background is in computer information technology,” Mitch says. “What I realized is that I had a unique ability to explain concepts to people in a way that made them clear. So I put that ability to work.” Mitch started out writing guides for the installation of televisions and other home electronics products and worked his way up to more complex writing. “People usually think of math and writing as separate activities,” Mitch describes. “My career proves that they actually can go hand in hand.” Mitch’s writing is included in all his company’s products, helping clients across the United States and as far away as the United Kingdom and other European countries that use different measurement systems. Consequently, he needs to be familiar with conversions in order to clearly present concepts. For instance, he sometimes must convert inches and feet into centimeters and meters depending on the audience for whom he is writing. In the end, though, he fi nds more similarities than differences in how to write clearly for different readers. “The beauty of math is that it is universal,” Mitch says. “You just have to present it to people in a way that makes sense to them.” In this chapter, we explore a key component in sharing math across contexts (and continents!)—measurement and conversion. We also introduce some skills that will help you in your own writing, in class or on the job.
