One of the most important is Tanya Richards. emPOWERme: Active Listening As a civil drafter, Tanya is responsible for creating the drawings and plans for the construction of civil projects such as new highways or sewer systems. Her plans have to detail not only the visual aspects of a project, but also the physical features of the land, the types and amounts of materials to be used, and how construction can be completed to meet specifi cations. “I think of my job as translating ideas into reality,” Tanya says. “My plans are like instructions for completing these massive undertakings.” Not surprisingly, math is a core component of Tanya’s work. Every drawing she makes involves hours of measurement and calculation. Skill in using fractions, she says, is particularly important. “I need to be able to make different parts fi t together on a single plan,” she explains. “So I’m always adding of a mile here to of a mile there, removing half a ton of weight from a support that had been carrying 78 of a ton before.” In this chapter, we continue our work with fractions, exploring how they can be added and subtracted. Later, we’ll look at a skill that, like drafting, involves bringing together many different kinds of information into a single, organized document: note-taking.
