Chapter 4 Plan What are your goals for Chapter 4? How can you accomplish each goal? 1 Be prepared before and during class. • Don’t stay out late the night before, and be sure to set your alarm clock! • Bring a pencil, notebook paper, and textbook to class. • Avoid distractions by turning off your cell phone during class. • Pay attention, take good notes, and ask questions. • Complete your homework on time, and ask questions on problems you do not understand. 2 Understand the homework to the point where you could do it without needing any help or hints. • Read the directions, and show all of your steps. • Go to the professor’s offi ce for help. • Rework homework and quiz problems, and fi nd similar problems for practice. 3 Use the P.O.W.E.R. framework to learn how to effectively take notes in class: Active Listening • Read the Study Strategy as it is outlined in the P.O.W.E.R. framework. • Decide which steps you might need to improve. • Complete the emPOWERme that appears before the Chapter Summary. 4 Write your own goal. • What are your objectives for Chapter 4? How can you accomplish each objective? 1 Learn to add and subtract like fractions. • Understand and visualize the difference between like and unlike fractions. • Recognize the quickest way to add, and subtract like fractions. 2 Master the process of finding least common multiples, and understand how it helps you find a least common denominator. • Learn the four different ways to fi nd the LCM and which process is most effi cient for you. • Practice, and learn the procedure for Writing a Fraction with a Different Denominator in your own words. • Apply the process of fi nding the LCM to fi nding the LCD. 3 Learn to add and subtract unlike fractions, and solve applied problems. • Recognize why fractions must be like fractions before adding or subtracting. • Notice that you must master fi nding the LCD and writing a fraction with a different denominator fi rst! • Use the Five Steps for Solving Applied Problems. 4 Add and subtract mixed numbers. • Know the procedure for adding and subtracting mixed numbers. • Understand how to regroup a mixed number for subtraction or addition. • Recognize and master a new way to add or subtract using improper fractions. 5 Compare fractions, and use the order of operations. • Take notes, and write the procedures and defi nitions in your own words. • Complete all the exercises, and ask for help when you need it. 6 Write your own goal. • www.mhhe.com/messersmith CHAPTER 4 Adding and Subtracting Fractions 221
