Read the explanations, follow the examples, take notes, and complete the You Trys. 1 Learn the Basic Units of Length Before the late 1700s, different countries used different units of measurement, which led to diffi culties trading between countries. In the 1790s, the French Academy of Science developed a simpler system of measurement, based on multiples of 10, called the metric system. This system was adopted by almost all countries around the world. It made both measuring and trade easier. Although the United States still uses its own system of feet, cups, pounds, and so on, most scientifi c measurement in the United States is done in metric units. Note The metric system is also called the International System of Units, or SI for short. The basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter.
