The other units of measurement in the decimal system are based on powers of 10. Because they are all related to the meter, these units are described by using a prefi x on the word meter. The table shows the different units of measurement and their relationships to the meter. Metric Units of Length 1 kilometer (km) 1000 m 1 hectometer (hm) 100 m 1 dekameter (dam) 10 m 1 meter (m) 1 m 1 decimeter (dm) 1 10 m or 0.1 m 1 centimeter (cm) 1 100 m or 0.01 m 1 millimeter (mm) 1 1000 m or 0.001 m Note The units used most often are kilometer, meter, centimeter, and millimeter. We have already compared the length of a meter with the length of a yard. Here are some examples that will give you an idea of the lengths the metric units represent. A dime is about 1 mm thick. A USB plug is about 1 cm wide. Distance is usually measured in kilometers. Height is usually measured in A kilometer is about 2 3 of a mile. centimeters. 1 mile 1 km 165 cm ≈ 65 in. Note These same metric prefixes are used for measuring mass and capacity, as we will see later in this chapter. www.mhhe.com/messersmith SECTION 7.2 The Metric System: Length 579
